Session Drivers

Weakness in IT and technology stocks weighed on the indices as investors booked profits following recent gains. The Nifty 50 opened lower at 24,152.05 and drifted through the session, with selling pressure intensifying in the final hour. Sector rotation remained muted as cautious sentiment kept buyers on the sidelines.

Trading volumes on the NSE stood at 2,677.06 lakh shares. The Nifty 50 has now declined 0.74% over the past month and remains 6.45% below its year-to-date peak. The index is trading 7.56% lower for the calendar year, though it has delivered a 45.79% gain over the past five years.

While sectoral performance data showed mixed trends, with sugar stocks gaining 2.08% and e-commerce aggregator stocks up 1.27%, these pockets of strength failed to offset broader market pressure. Gas distribution and retail chains also posted modest gains of 0.75% and 0.74% respectively.
