GIFT NIFTY opened marginally lower at 24,065.50 on Friday, down 16 points or 0.07% from the previous close of 24,068, tracking weakness across Asian markets. The index slipped to a session low of 24,052 in the opening minutes as the Indian cash market commenced trading.

The early session showed choppy price action. After opening with a modest gap down, GIFT NIFTY briefly tested 24,079 — the session high — before sellers re-emerged to push the index back toward opening levels. As of 09:15 IST, the index was trading at 24,052, holding just above the morning low in a tight 27-point range.

Asian Markets Weigh on Sentiment

Regional cues turned negative overnight, with Japan's Nikkei 225 down 111.16 points or 0.17% to 64,214.48. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 97.90 points or 0.39% to 25,213.31, while the BSE Sensex opened 417.49 points lower at 76,152.86. The coordinated decline across major Asian indices reflected cautious positioning ahead of the weekend.

The overnight action in GIFT NIFTY had already telegraphed the weakness, with the index trading in a narrow band between 24,038 and 24,058 during the Singapore session. Volume remained subdued through the early European hours before picking up as Indian participants entered the market.

Early Session Price Action

The 5-minute candle data showed GIFT NIFTY struggling to find direction in the first hour of trade. After opening near 24,050 during the overnight Singapore session, the index drifted lower to 24,038 before mounting a recovery attempt that carried it back to 24,056. That bounce proved short-lived as sellers returned to cap gains.

GIFT NIFTY is now trading at 24,052, effectively flat from where it started the session. The index is testing support near the psychological 24,000 level, with the early session range suggesting limited conviction on either side. The domestic cash market's opening decline has done little to inspire fresh buying interest in the derivative contract.
