GIFT NIFTY opened virtually unchanged at 24,285.5 on Thursday, a gain of just 1.5 points or 0.01% from the previous close of 24,284.0, as traders awaited cues from a mixed Asian session and the Indian cash market opening.

The contract traded in a narrow range through the early session, touching a high of 24,332.5 and a low of 24,271.5 before settling at 24,289.0 by 09:15 IST. The opening minutes saw mild volatility, with the contract dipping to 24,267.5 within the first fifteen minutes before recovering steadily through the first hour of trade.

Early price action reflected cautious positioning. After opening at 24,288.0 in the overnight session, GIFT NIFTY slipped to session lows near 24,266.0 around 00:45 IST before finding support. The contract then climbed back above 24,290.0 by the 01:00 hour, gaining momentum as Asian markets began their Thursday trading.

Asian Markets Send Mixed Signals

Regional indices delivered conflicting messages. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 930.73 points or 1.49% to close at 61,434.19, pulling back from recent record highs. The index had opened at 62,734.68 and traded in a wide range between 60,448.90 and 63,138.04 during the session.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index moved in the opposite direction, climbing 497.07 points or 1.96% to 25,807.92. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 90.80 points to reach 9,038.60, while China's SSE Composite Index gained 0.40% to 3,828.47.

Indian Cash Market Opens Higher

The Nifty 50 opened in positive territory, trading at 24,250.20, up 264.85 points or 1.10% in early trade. The BSE Sensex gained 888.68 points to reach 77,654.60, suggesting domestic investors were taking cues from the firmer Hang Seng rather than Tokyo's weakness.

The divergence between Japan and Hong Kong left GIFT NIFTY trading in a holding pattern, with the contract grinding sideways as the cash market found its footing. By 09:15 IST, GIFT NIFTY was trading at 24,289.0, holding a narrow 5-point premium to the previous close and tracking the broader Asian consolidation after overnight losses on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1,152.88 points or 2.18% to 51,615.44.

The muted opening in GIFT NIFTY, despite strong gains in the Nifty 50 cash market, reflected the typical premium adjustment as arbitrageurs positioned for the day ahead. The contract's session range of just 61 points suggested limited conviction in either direction as traders digested the regional crosscurrents.
