GIFT NIFTY Slides at Open Despite Mixed Asian Signals

GIFT NIFTY opened at 24,065 on Tuesday morning, down 33 points or 0.14% from the previous close of 24,074, as pre-market optimism from overnight trade faded into the Indian session. The contract touched an early high of 24,075 before dipping to a low of 24,037.5, trading at 24,041 as of 09:15 IST.

The session began with pronounced weakness in the offshore hours. GIFT NIFTY opened at 24,160 at midnight Singapore time before shedding over 30 points in the first 90 minutes of trade. The index found temporary support near 24,125 around 00:40 IST before consolidating in a tight 24,130–24,145 band through the early Asian morning. A brief recovery attempt at 01:05 IST lifted the contract back above 24,150, but momentum faded as the Indian cash market opening approached.

Regional Markets Show Divergence

Asian markets presented a mixed picture. The Hang Seng Index traded at 24,213.72, up 0.16%, with volume of 2.99 billion shares and an intraday range of 24,095.73 to 24,449.77. The Nikkei 225 closed at 67,242.73, down 1,315 points or 1.92% at 3:45 PM Tokyo time, after trading between a low of 66,653.11 and a high of 69,078.21 from a previous close of 68,557.73.

The Nifty 50 Index opened marginally higher at 24,211.00, up 0.02%, tracking GIFT NIFTY's subdued tone but showing slightly more resilience than the offshore contract. The divergence between Japanese weakness and Hong Kong's modest gains left GIFT NIFTY traders without a clear directional catalyst heading into the domestic session.

Early Session Volatility Narrows

GIFT NIFTY's early price action reflected classic overnight uncertainty. The contract shed 60 points in the first hour of Singapore trade, stabilized through the Hong Kong morning, then attempted a 25-point bounce before settling into a 40-point range by the time Mumbai opened. The failure to reclaim 24,150 in pre-market trade signaled limited upside conviction despite the Hang Seng's advance.

With the contract now trading near session lows at 24,041 and the Nifty 50 cash market holding fractionally positive, traders are watching whether domestic institutional flows can push the index back toward the 24,065 opening level or if selling pressure will test support below 24,000. The 38-point spread between GIFT NIFTY's overnight high and current level underscores the tentative mood as participants digest conflicting regional cues.
