The Nifty 50 closed at 23,223.40 on September 24, 2026, shedding 223.40 points or 0.95% in a session marked by persistent selling pressure. The index opened weak at 23,221.80 and traded in a narrow band between 23,196.45 and 23,281.95, unable to reclaim ground despite intermittent attempts. Market breadth remained negative as investors booked profits across sectors.

Indian Market Drivers

Sectoral performance reflected cautious sentiment, though specifics on institutional flows and individual stock movers remained limited in available data. The broader Nifty indices showed mixed action, with Nifty Next 50 declining 279.90 points to 71,804.05 and Nifty Bank falling 255.10 points to 56,215.55. Nifty Financial Services dropped 106.75 points to 25,417.95, indicating weakness in heavyweight financials that weighed on the benchmark.

Among sectoral indices, pharmaceuticals edged up 0.15%, while defence and real estate investment trusts gained 0.13% each. Auto ancillary stocks added 0.12%, providing isolated pockets of strength. Bearings emerged as the top-performing sector with a 1.70% gain. However, these gains were insufficient to offset the broader market drag as most sectors traded flat to lower.

The Sensex mirrored the Nifty's trajectory, with both indices showing signs of consolidation after recent volatility. Volume data suggested cautious participation, with the Nifty recording average trading activity. The 52-week range of 22,182.55 to 26,373.20 continues to frame the index's medium-term trajectory, with today's close well below recent highs.
